CENTRAL ELECTROCHEMICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE Established in 1953, CECRI, Karaikudi is one of the largest electrochemical laboratories in the world, carrying out R&D work in the area of electrochemical Science and Technology. Three extension centres of CECRI are functioning at Chennai, Mandapam and Tuticorin. CECRI Madras Centre, established in 1971, in this complex is one among the three centers of Central Electrochemical Research Institute, Karaikudi 630 006. This Centre has been recently transformed into a full fledged R&D Centre for select electrochemical power systems namely Fuel cells, Supercapacitors and Electrochemical solar cells. The focus of this Centre is to act as a nucleas for developing functionally better performing cost effective electrochemical power delivering systems of the above mentioned devices through creation of new knowledge and its transformation into application oriented utility. The present R&D thrust is on Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell (PEFC), Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) , Direct Borohydride Fuel Cell (DBFC), Super capacitors (Supercaps) and Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSC). To meet the challenges in the above mentioned activities, the center is geared now for developing appropriate components and systems involving interdisciplinary approaches of Electrochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Computational methods. The Centre has been recently reconfigured with state of art facilities with following laboratories namely (i) Electrocatalysis Laboratory, (ii) Materials Characterization Laboratory, (iii) Preparative Laboratory, (iv) Electrode Fabrication Laboratory and (v) Fuel cell assembly and evaluation Laboratory. The Centre is also equipped with LAN connection with Broad band internet connectivity for accessing global knowledge base on specific areas of interest and latest developments. The following are the major instrument facilities created at this Centre: 1. Electrochemical work station 2. Multistat Potentiostat / Galvanostat with Frequency Response Analyser 3. Membrane Electrode Assembly preparation facilities 4. All in one laboratory for preparative chemistry. 5. Fuel cell testing stations 6. Universal Testing Machine specific to polymer based samples
